Hi, my Surface fan spins quickly when it turns off and then turns back on and spins quickly and then turns back off and repeats. How can I fix this without opening the Surface? Please help me. My Surface has the latest update and I use it lightly.

The fan behavior described is usually caused by high CPU load, heat, or a hardware issue. Several checks can be done without opening the Surface:

    1. Check for heavy CPU usage
      1. In the Search box, type Task Manager and open it.
      2. Select More details if needed.
      3. On the Processes tab, select the CPU column to sort by usage.
      4. Close apps or browser tabs that show high CPU usage and are not needed.
Reducing CPU load can reduce how often and how fast the fan spins.
    2. Adjust power mode to reduce fan speed
Lower performance settings reduce heat and fan activity.
      • Windows 11: Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and choose Recommended.
      • Windows 10: Select the battery icon on the taskbar and choose Recommended.
Higher modes like Better performance or Best performance make the device warmer and the fan faster.
    3. Consider ambient temperature and charging
      • If the room is warmer than 25°C / 77°F, the fan will run more often. Use the device in a cooler environment if possible.
      • While the device is charging (especially if not yet fully charged), extra cooling may be needed and the fan may run more frequently.
    4. Install the latest updates and run Surface tools
      • Open the Surface app (search for Surface in Start). In Help & support, check update status and select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install any available updates.
      • Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit: select Start, search for Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, open it, and follow the on-screen steps. This can detect and fix some common issues.
    5. Check if the fan noise is abnormal
      • Normal: steady airflow sound that changes with workload.
      • Abnormal: grinding, whining, or ticking sounds. These can indicate a hardware problem.
If abnormal sounds continue after the steps above, or the fan keeps rapidly starting and stopping, service may be required. Use the options in the Surface app (Help & support > Get help) or the support links in the references to arrange repair or in-person inspection.

If none of these steps improve the behavior and the fan continues to cycle rapidly, the safest next step is professional service rather than opening the Surface.
