Unable to use Visio on MacBook and need alternative for org chart

Hi everyone, I’m currently using a MacBook (macOS 26.5.1) and I’m trying to work with a Visio (.vsdx) file that I created offline. I understand that Visio desktop is not supported on macOS, so I tried opening the file using Visio for the web via [Office.com]. While I’m able to open the file online, I’m having issues because a specific add-in used in the file is no longer available or supported, which affects how the diagram works. As an alternative, I also tried creating an organisation chart in Excel (Mac) using SmartArt, but it doesn’t provide the same functionality or flexibility as Visio.

My questions are:

Are there any alternative methods or tools on Mac that can replicate Visio features for organization charts?

Is there a way to replace or work around unsupported Visio add-ins when using Visio for the web?

Can anyone recommend the best approach to edit or recreate Visio files on macOS? Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello @Shivaji may I know which add-in and specific feature you were using in Visio?

As you also mentioned, Visio for the web only supports compatible elements within a .vsdx file, and advanced features such as add-ins, data linking, and automation are not fully supported.

Because of that, if your diagram depends on that add-in, it may not behave the same way when opened in the web version. In most cases, the available approaches would be:

    • Rebuild that logic manually in another tool
    • Or open/edit the file using the full desktop version of Visio on Windows

As another approach, if the add-in was previously used to pull or sync external data into shapes, you might be able to rebuild that functionality using Power Automate, for example by syncing data from SharePoint or Excel to support your diagram. (This would depend on your exact scenario.)

Also, if you don’t mind, I’d like to ask a few more details via private message so I can better understand your case.
