I had to replace my motherboard without any knowledge my PC would not boot so I could not follow the recommendations for a hardware change. Now I cannot activate because of new hardware with my License Key.

    Hello,

How did you obtain your license initially?

Did it come with the device preinstalled, or did you purchase it?

If you purchased it, did you purchase from Microsoft, or from third party?

Is it originally a Win7/8 key?

Because the motherboard was replaced without preparing for the hardware change, Windows 11 no longer finds a license that matches the new hardware, so activation fails even with the existing product key.

    Use these options in order:

    1. Try activating with the existing product key
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      2. Select Change product key.
      3. Enter the 25-character product key that belongs to this license and follow the prompts.
    2. Use the Activation Troubleshooter (hardware change path)
      1. In Settings > System > Activation, select Troubleshoot.
      2. If the troubleshooter can’t resolve it directly, look for the link to reactivate after a hardware change and follow that path while signed in with the same Microsoft account that was used before the hardware change.
    3. If Windows originally came preinstalled (OEM) and the motherboard was replaced
      • A Windows license is tied to device hardware. After a significant change like a motherboard replacement, Windows might not locate a matching license.
      • If the PC’s original manufacturer replaced the motherboard, the device should reactivate automatically. If it does not, check whether the OEM supplied a COA card with a 25-character key:
        1. Gently scratch off the gray coating to reveal the key.
        2. Go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter that key.
      • If Windows came preinstalled and the motherboard was replaced independently, a new license may be required. In Settings > System > Activation, select Go to Microsoft Store to purchase a new Windows license.
    4. If error codes like 0xC004F211, 0xC004F213, or 0x803F7001 appear
      • These indicate Windows cannot find a valid license after a hardware change or no product key is found.
      • Use Change product key to enter a valid key if available, or use Go to Microsoft Store to obtain a new license.
    5. If activation still fails
      • Use the Activation Troubleshooter again from Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
      • If it still cannot reactivate, contact Microsoft customer support for assistance with reactivation after the hardware change.
