Edge update caused loss of favicons for ALL my favorites

Right after Edge last updated all my favicons disappeared. I used Copilot to find a fix but not one of them worked. The closest I got was right-clicking on each favorite and opening each new tab. That restored favicons for about a minute.

    Hi,

This is a known bug that has already been reported by multiple users. To confirm, do you have Edge set to clear browsing data when it closes? If so, go to edge://settings/privacy/clearBrowsingData/clearOnClose and disable Browsing History. Based on reports in the thread below, a user has found that clearing browsing history on exit can cause favicons to disappear.

If the options are not active, we can try another workaround.

Edge favicons can be lost or become incorrect after an update because of how Edge caches and looks up site icons. Refreshing the favicon cache and database forces Edge to recache icons for favorites and new-tab tiles.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Revisit favorite sites to refresh their icons
      • Open Edge.
      • For several key favorites, open each site directly (not from a cached tab). For example, open https://yourdomain/home.aspx instead of a subpage.
      • Wait a few seconds on each page so Edge can download the favicon again.
      • Check whether the icons now appear correctly in Favorites and on the new tab page.
    2. Clear cached images and files (favicon cache)
      • In Edge, go to edge://settings/privacy.
      • Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
      • Set Time range to All time (recommended when icons are badly corrupted or missing).
      • Select Cached images and files.
      • Select Clear now.
      • Close Edge, reopen it, then visit several of the favorite sites again so Edge can recache their icons.
    3. Manually clear the favicon database This forces Edge to rebuild its favicon store from scratch. Browser data such as favorites remain, but icons will be temporarily generic until recached.
      1. Close all Edge windows.
      2. Open File Explorer and enter this path in the address bar, then press Enter: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default
      3. Delete the files named Favicons and Favicons-journal.
      4. Start Edge again.
      5. Visit favorite sites so their icons are downloaded and stored again. Icons may initially appear as default letter icons until Edge finishes recaching.

These steps address both missing and incorrect icons caused by favicon cache issues after an update.
