A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
Dear @Nathan Zehr,
I understand how frustrating it is when a reliable workflow suddenly stops updating after a system and software upgrade.
Based on your description, the core issue is that your cross-sheet formulas or links are no longer calculating automatically when you modify the source data. This is a common behavior change after a fresh installation or upgrade, and it is almost always caused by a change in Excel's calculation settings or security blocks.
Here are the most effective solutions to resolve this issue:
Step 1: Check the Calculation Options
Often, a new Office installation defaults to "Manual" calculation mode, which prevents formulas from updating automatically when data changes.
- Open your Excel workbook.
- Go to the Formulas tab in the ribbon.
- Click on Calculation Options and ensure that Automatic is selected.
Alternative Shortcut: Press F9 on your keyboard. If your data updates immediately after pressing F9, your workbook is definitely set to manual calculation.
Step 2: Verify Workbook Links and Security Settings
Windows 11 and Office 2021 introduce stricter security protocols that might be blocking the background data transfer.
- Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
- Select External Content.
- Ensure that enable automatic update for all Workbook Links is checked (or set to "Prompt user" if you prefer a warning).
- Additionally, if a yellow security warning bar appears at the top of your screen when you open the file, you must click Enable Content for the real-time data sync to work.
Step 3: Safe mode option
Sometimes, the upgrade process leaves behind corrupted cache files that interfere with Excel's background processes.
- Close Excel completely.
- Press
Windows Key + Rto open the Run dialog box. - Type
excel /safeand press Enter to launch Excel in Safe Mode. - Open your file and see if the data transfers upon modification. If it works, a corrupted add-in or cache is causing the block. You can clear your temporary files or disable recent add-ins via File > Options > Add-ins.
Step 4: Repair office
Repair Office: Sometimes a quick repair of your Microsoft 365 installation can fix underlying issues that cause settings to become stuck. You can do this by going to Windows Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify and choosing "Quick Repair".

Please try changing the Calculation Option to Automatic first, as this resolves this specific issue in the vast majority of cases. Let me know if the issue persists.
