Microsoft edge using over 60% CPU with 500+ processes running at one time. Help! My computer is grinding to a halt!

My son's Roblox game is continuously crashing which I think might be down to Microsoft Edge. As soon as I open Edge or Roblox (using app), Microsoft edge runs over 500 processes, most of them saying "renderer." I've tried all the obvious recommendations like altering settings in Edge. I've even tried capping how much RAM Edge can use. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Roblox in case this was the issue. I've "repaired" Edge under settings. It's getting to the point where I'm considering resetting my laptop back to factory settings. Is 500+ edge processes normal and if not, what could be causing it? It's doing it on both mine and my son's profiles and it's running Windows 11 on an Acer with 8GB RAM. Thank you!

    Hi Katherine Kennedy,

500+ Edge processes and CPU usage above 60% is not typical for normal browsing, especially on a system with 8 GB of RAM. Since you've already repaired Edge and reinstalled Roblox, it may be worth checking whether a specific Edge component or browser profile is generating excessive renderer processes.

To narrow down this issue, please try the following checks:

1, Test with a fresh Edge profile

    • Open Edge > Profile icon > Add Profile.
    • Create a temporary profile and test Roblox/Edge.
    • If the issue does not occur, the existing Edge profile data may be contributing to the behavior.

2, Check Edge's internal Task Manager

    • Press Shift + Esc in Edge.
    • Sort by CPU or Memory.
    • Identify whether a particular tab, extension, or renderer process is responsible for the resource usage. If possible, sharing a screenshot of the Edge Task Manager while the CPU usage is high may help identify exactly which process type is consuming resources.

3, Run a full malware scan

    • Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
    • Run a Full Scan.

4, Compare behavior in InPrivate mode

    • Open an InPrivate window (Ctrl + Shift + N).
    • If CPU usage drops significantly, the issue may be related to profile data, cached content, or browser customizations.

500+ Edge processes and 60% CPU usage are not normal for typical browsing and will cause severe slowdowns on an 8 GB RAM device. Use the built-in tools in Edge and Windows to identify and reduce the load before considering a factory reset.

Try these steps in order and test after each one:

    1. Identify what is using CPU inside Edge
      1. Open Edge.
      2. Press Shift+Esc to open the Browser Task Manager.
      3. Sort by CPU and then by Memory.
      4. Look for any tab, extension, subframe, or utility process that is using a large share of CPU or memory.
      5. Select the offending process and choose End process, then watch whether overall CPU usage drops.
    2. Turn off all extensions Extensions can create many renderer processes and high CPU.
      1. In Edge, go to edge://extensions/.
      2. Turn off all extensions.
      3. Use Edge and Roblox again and see if CPU and process count drop.
      4. If things improve, turn extensions back on one at a time to find which one causes the spike.
    3. Enable sleeping tabs to reduce background load
      1. Go to edge://settings/system/managePerformance.
      2. Turn on Save resources with sleeping tabs.
      3. Set a short inactivity timeout so background tabs sleep quickly.
      4. Only add truly important sites to the “never sleep” exception list.
    4. Stop Edge background activity when closed If Edge keeps using CPU after closing all windows, background processes are still running.
      1. Go to edge://settings/system.
      2. Turn off Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.
    5. Verify hardware acceleration and GPU driver Software rendering can push CPU usage very high.
      1. Go to edge://gpu.
      2. Under Graphics Feature Status, check that hardware acceleration is in use (not software-only) for major items.
      3. If many items show software-only:
        • Update the laptop’s GPU/graphics driver from Windows Update or the OEM.
        • In edge://settings/system, make sure Use graphics acceleration when available is turned on.
    6. Reset Edge settings (non-destructive) If configuration or flags are corrupted, a reset can help without losing key data.
      1. Go to edge://settings/reset.
      2. Select Restore settings to their default values.
      3. Confirm.
      • Bookmarks, history, and saved passwords are preserved.
      • Pinned tabs, startup page, search engine, and extensions are reset.
    7. Use Windows Task Manager efficiency mode (optional) To keep Edge from starving Roblox and other apps:
      1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
      2. On the Processes tab, select the Edge process group or specific heavy processes.
      3. Use the Efficiency mode control to limit their resource usage when they are in the background. This can improve responsiveness and reduce thermal load, especially on an 8 GB RAM machine.
    8. If Edge is still unstable or crashing If Edge itself is freezing or crashing while doing the above, also:
      • Close other tabs, apps, and downloads to free memory.
      • Make sure Edge is fully up to date from Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
      • Restart the PC and test again.

If, after these steps, Edge still spawns hundreds of renderer processes with no obvious heavy tabs or extensions, collect diagnostic data (Edge version, Browser Task Manager screenshots, edge://discards output) and contact Microsoft Support rather than immediately doing a factory reset.
