When I make changes in excel, I get a message that says "Your changes will be lost if you don't save them. Click cancel and then activate your subscription to save your changes." How do I activate my subscription?Screenshot 2026-06-11 at 10.54.41 AM

    1

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognised correctly.

    2

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

    https://account.microsoft.com/services/

If not, go to the Payments and Billing section, is it indicated your payment has been processed correctly.

The message appears because Excel detects that the Microsoft 365 subscription for the signed-in account is not active, so saving is blocked until the subscription is reactivated.

Use these steps to reactivate and then save:

    1. Confirm the subscription is active
      1. Close all Office apps on the Mac.
      2. In a browser, go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used in Excel.
      4. Under the Microsoft 365 heading, verify that the subscription shows as active and not expired or cancelled.
      5. If it is expired or cancelled, renew it by following the renewal steps provided on that page.
    2. Fix “subscription cancelled”/“subscription problem” if it is active
      1. Still in the browser, confirm again that the subscription status is active.
      2. Open Excel on the Mac.
      3. Go to File > Account (or Excel > Sign Out if visible) and sign out of the current account.
      4. Close Excel completely.
      5. Reopen Excel, and when prompted, sign back in with the same Microsoft account that has the active subscription.
      6. If there is an option such as Update license or Reactivate, select it and complete sign-in.
    3. Save the workbook again
      1. Reopen the workbook in Excel.
      2. Make a small change.
      3. Use File > Save As and save with a new file name if needed.

If the subscription page shows that the plan is Microsoft 365 Basic, note that this plan does not include desktop apps such as Excel; in that case, desktop Excel will remain in a reduced/blocked state and a plan that includes desktop apps (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal or Family) is required.
